Dual Language Education Building Blocks

Full day or Half Day Professional Development

The full-day professional development (PD) is an in-depth look at program elements necessary for the implementation of a Dual Language Education program.  This workshop is available for newly hired staff joining existing programs and serves as a refresher of program implementation for districts/schools in early stages of program implementation. Participants will be involved in reflection and decision making regarding the development and implementation of their Dual Language Education program.  The content of this PD will be based on Strand 1, Program Structure, and Strand 5 Instruction, of the Guiding Principles of Dual Language Education, Third Edition, 2017.


The half-day professional development presents program elements necessary for the implementation of a Dual Language Education program with some opportunities for reflection and decision making. This workshop is available for newly hired staff joining existing programs and serves as a refresher for program implementation in districts/schools at early stages of program implementation. The content of this PD will be based on Strand 1, Program Structure, and Strand 5 Instruction, of the Guiding Principles of Dual Language Education, Third Edition, 2017.


Guiding Principles of Dual Language Education, Strand 1, Program Structure will include:

  • Setting the stage: Motivations, Monolingual vs Multilingual mindsets
  • Dual language program fundamentals
    • Definition, Dual Language program goals, Non-Negotiables
    • Three core goals of Language Immersion Programs: a) grade-level academic achievement , b) bilingualism and biliteracy and c) sociocultural competence
  • Dual Language Program Implementation options
    • Program models and design, literacy development, staffing option, language allocation
  • What research says are the benefits and challenges of Dual Language Education
  • Next Steps: Timeline for New Program Implementation

Guiding Principles of Dual Language Education, Strand 3, Instruction will include:

  • Review of Second Language Acquisition
  • Review of WIDA Standards: Guiding Principles of Language Development
  • Dual Language Pedagogy, selected teaching strategies
    • Differentiated Instruction
