    Connecticut Dual Language Education Symposium


    • Are you interested in improving educational outcomes for English Learners in your district?
    • Would you like to help more students in your district attain the Seal of  Biliteracy?
    • Dual Language Education is an approach that can help you accomplish both objectives.
    The CT DLE Symposium is designed as a networking and advocacy event to celebrate the successes of existing dual language programs, brainstorm challenges and solutions for expanding dual language education, and increase awareness of resources to support dual language program implementation in the state.

    Course Description:

    Participants will develop their teacher toolkit of metalinguistic awareness strategies for bilingual and dual language students.   Language development in bilingual programs must make explicit connections between students' two languages and cultures. Learning in two languages must incorporate the similarities and differences in phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics in both languages.   Strategies that will be introduced in this one-day session include:  Academic Conversations (Jeff Zwiers), Bridging (Teaching for Biliteracy) Asi se dice (Literacy Squared) and Visible Thinking (Project Zero).  Sample lesson plans and videos of students engaged in these strategies will be shared during this session.  While this professional development opportunity is geared towards Spanish and English at the elementary level, the strategies would be useful with any two languages and could be modified for dual language learners at any grade.

    Course Description:

    According to the Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education 3rd Ed, a quality dual language curriculum is one that is "standards-based and promotes attainment of the three core goals of dual language education."  Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of unique elements of a dual language curriculum, examine an example of a dual language curriculum map and unit, and begin designing their own curriculum maps and unit plans.  Participants who have attended or read Teaching for Biliteracy will be able to use that learning in this guided two-day work session.  Curriculum design teams are encouraged to attend and work together to maximize progress and impact for their program.

    Incorporating Sheltering Instruction in Dual Language Programs

    Course Description:

    After observing and dissecting two model Dual Language /Sheltered Instruction lessons (one in English and one in Spanish), participants will be guided to write a lesson that includes objectives, materials, and strategies to teach emergent learners. In the afternoon participants will present and will receive feedback from the group.

    Audience: This workshop is planned for teachers new in one-way or two-way programs and/or for teachers who are new in the dual language field.  Experienced dual language teachers are also welcomed.

    Course Description:

    In this two-day professional development institute, the facilitators will introduce the powerful notion of the Bridge to teachers, administrators, and leadership teams from dual language programs.  The Bridge is the instructional moment when teachers bring the two languages together, strategically guiding bilingual learners to transfer academic content they have learned in one language to the other, engage in contrastive analysis, develop academic English and Spanish across the content areas, read and write grade-level texts across the curriculum, and develop metalinguistic awareness.

     Course Description:

    Literacy Squared is a comprehensive model that has been designed to accelerate the development of biliteracy in Spanish-English emerging bilingual children attending elementary dual language schools. The Literacy Squared Instructional Model uses their theoretically informed pedagogy consisting of four components: oracy, writing, reading and metalinguistic awareness.  This one-day professional development opportunity will cover El Dictado and Lotta Lara, two specific strategies as described in Literacy Squared.  In addition, participants will be introduced to instructional planning for paired literacy.

    Course Description:

    Many Dual Language teachers begin their careers with great enthusiasm but are left wondering what makes dual language instruction different from "good instruction."  Coaching teachers can help teachers deepen their understanding of Dual Language Pedagogy, feel more confident and successful in their classrooms, and more consistently incorporate specific best practices in their daily instruction.  This one-day workshop is designed for Dual Language coaches, coordinators, principals and teacher-leaders who serve as mentors for their colleagues.  Participants will examine and discuss the possible impact different approaches to coaching and will get hands-on practice with a coaching model developed specifically for Dual Language programs.
